The UNKS, established in March of 1998, was the first graduate school to specialize in North Korean studies in South Korea. The UNKS has its foundations on the dynamic research and experience of the IFES(Institute of Far Eastern Studies of Kyungnam Univ).

Purpose

The University of North Korean Studies was established in 2005 with its foundation based on successful research and academic experience on North Korea and unification issues from the Kyungnam University’s Institute for Far Eastern Studies established in 1972 and Kyungnam University’s Graduate School of North Korean Studies in 1997.

The UNKS has an intimate cooperative relations with Kyungnam University's Institute for Far Eastern Studies with a new model of education that incorporates both research and education, as a leading educational institute in the field of North Korea and unification studies.

A New Approach

UNKS started off as a Graduate School of North Korean Studies at Kyungnam University, and it became a full-fledged independent institute of higher learning in 2007, specializing in the research and education of North Korea and unification.

With new demands in specialization of higher learning and market reform of education, UNKS is taking a new approach to remain competitive both domestically and internationally as a prestigious institute based on past experience with a firm vision of the future for the next ten years.

Educational Goal

Our institution's educational goal is to establish a social educational system in preparation for unification as the hub of  North Korean studies, and foster professionals in both research and practice to advance the field of North Korean and unification studies.
